Duplicating a Companion
Make a copy of a companion with exactly the settings and data you choose.
Duplicate a companion when you want a ready starting point for another one. You choose what comes along, and the copy always starts as its own companion that is not shared.
How to Duplicate
From the companion list:
- Tick one companion, or up to 10 to duplicate them together
- Click Duplicate (Duplicate 3 with three ticked) in the bar that replaces the usual controls. With more than 10 ticked the button is greyed out
From inside a companion:
- Open the companion's settings page
- Click the companion pill in the header to open its profile popup
- Click Duplicate Companion (above Delete Companion)
Then untick anything you do not want and click Duplicate.
The copy is named automatically: "Name (Copy)", or "Name (Copy 2)" and so on if that is taken. Rename it later inside the companion.
Duplicating Several at Once
With more than one companion ticked, one dialog covers all of them, and your choices apply to every companion. Each copy is named after its original in the same way.
- The copies are made one after another, and the button shows the progress, for example "Duplicating 2 of 5...". Closing the dialog is paused until it finishes
- You stay on the list, and the selection is cleared when it finishes
You get one message at the end. Companions that could not be copied are named (up to three) with the reason, for example because they are already being duplicated, and the others are still copied. If you reach your companion limit or run out of storage, or make too many requests in a minute, the remaining ones are skipped and the message says why.
What You Can Choose
Everything is ticked by default, so Duplicate with no changes copies the whole companion. There are only two groups of choices, and you can change anything on the copy afterwards.
- Configuration: Persona (about, avatar, greeting, personality, featured photos), Behaviour (voice, style, quick starts, preferences, tools), Advanced (intake form, feedback, recording, sign-in) and Widget (widget settings and allowed websites). Anything you untick starts with the defaults of a brand new companion
- Data: Knowledge, Links, Resources and Guides. Each is copied whole. A kind the companion does not have copies nothing. Files that belong to a guide come with that guide
Files That Are Not Processed
A processed file is copied with everything the companion learned from it, with no reprocessing. Pending, failed and cancelled files keep that status. A file that was still queued or processing in the original becomes pending in the copy, because nothing is running for it there. Open the copy and press Process when you want it processed.
What Is Never Copied
Conversations, analytics, invites, share links, and guide runs and tickets are never copied. A copied guide starts with its public share turned off.
The copy always starts with visibility None, so nobody can reach it until you share it. See Publishing & Sharing.
How Long It Takes
- Settings, knowledge and links only - the copy is ready immediately and opens for you
- With resources or guides - the copy is finished in the background. You stay where you are and get a notification when it is ready. The original shows Being copied and the new copy shows Setting up... on the list meanwhile
While a companion is being duplicated, the original cannot be edited, uploaded to or deleted, though you can still change who it is shared with. The original can still be opened from the list. The new copy cannot be opened from the list until it is ready, and it cannot be shared yet. Unsaved changes on the page are not copied, so save first. Up to 10 duplicates can run at once per organization, and a few are processed at a time while the rest wait; if you hit the limit, try again when one finishes.
Cost and Limits
Duplicating uses no credits. The copied files and knowledge do use your storage and training capacity, and a new companion counts toward your plan's companion limit. If there is not enough room, you are told before anything is created.
If Something Goes Wrong
If the copy fails, it is removed completely, the original is unlocked and unchanged, and you get a notification. Nothing is half kept. If a copy gets stuck, you can delete it from its profile after about 35 minutes, and anything left over is cleaned up automatically within the hour. The copy shares nothing with the original afterwards, so deleting the original never affects the copy.
