Sources & References

When a companion draws on specific documents or resources to answer your question, it can show you exactly where that information came from. These are called source citations.

The Sources Pill

After a companion's response, you may see a small pill button showing the number of sources (e.g. "2 sources") with a book icon. This pill is collapsed by default to keep the chat clean.

Click the pill to expand the source cards. Click it again to collapse them. A chevron on the pill rotates to indicate whether the sources are visible.

How Source Cards Work

When expanded, each source card shows:

• File icon - An icon representing the type of source (PDF, Word doc, Excel, PowerPoint, video, image, or text file), colour-coded by type.
• File name - The name of the resource the companion referenced.
• Page, timestamp, or view chips - If the source is a PDF, you'll see page numbers you can click to jump to the exact page. For videos, you'll see timestamps. For images, you'll see a "View" chip that opens the image with its AI-generated caption.

Source cards appear in an animated grid that staggers in as the pill expands.

Clicking a Source

Click on a source card to open the original resource. On larger screens, it opens in a panel alongside the chat, so you can keep reading the conversation while you look at it. On smaller screens, where there isn't room for both, it opens in a new tab instead.

If the source has page or timestamp chips, clicking a specific chip takes you directly to the relevant section of that resource.

Why Some Answers Don't Have Sources

Not every response includes source citations. Sources only appear when the companion retrieves information from uploaded resources (documents, videos, images) that its creator has provided. If the companion answers from its general knowledge or instructions rather than a specific file, there won't be a source pill attached.

The Media Pill

Some answers also come with a Media pill next to the Sources pill - a separate button with a grid icon and a count (e.g. "3 media"). Unlike the Sources pill, it's expanded by default, so anything in it is visible as soon as the answer arrives - it's part of reading the answer, not a reference you consult afterward. Everything in this pill scrolls sideways as one strip; hover to reveal left/right arrows once there's more to see.

It gathers together everything visual about the answer, from up to three places:

• The cited document itself - a card for the source you're reading about, so you can open the full file directly instead of only seeing the diagrams pulled from it.
• Figures from the cited pages - diagrams, charts, or other visuals that appear on a page the companion cited. A figure isn't matched to your specific question the way a source is; it's included because it sits on a page already cited, so it may or may not be directly relevant.
• Anything the companion actively showed you - images, videos, documents, or links it displayed as part of its answer, not just referenced.

Each item shows a preview and its name; hover to reveal a View button. Click a figure to open it larger, with its full caption underneath - from there, click Open [file name] · page [number] to jump straight to that page in the source document viewer. Click anything else (a document, image, video, or link) to open it the same way a source card does: in the side panel on larger screens, a new tab on smaller ones, or - for an external link - always in a new tab.
